Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003) Quentin Tarantino is a genius, and this is his masterwork. Exuberant, inventive, kinetic, violent and fun, it grabs your attention right from the beginning and never lets go. Quite possibly the reason cinema was invented. 10/10
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) Downsized abbatoir workers, weird hitch-hikers, vandalised graveyards, abandoned cars, a macabre house, a hapless quintet of young lambs for the slaughter, and the gentle hum of a chainsaw. With these basic elements and next to no money, Tobe Hooper has spun an unapologetically mean-spirited tale of skewed family values and Southern discomfort, where all sanity is finished off with a skull-crushing hammer-blow. An absolute classic of horror, with many imitators but few rivals. 10/10
Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) From the fantastic opening animated short to the suitably wacky climax, this movie is not only a work of 'toon art but brilliant entertainment to boot. Add it to your collection now - and that's all folks. 10/10
Oodishon (2000) A slow-burning psychological thriller that builds ominously and inexorably to its shocking pay-off and then leaves you squirming in your seat - but with enough subtlety and depth that for days afterwards you will be trying to pick up the pieces. 'Audition' is a meditative, melancholic masterpiece that is not for the squeamish. 10/10
