A heart-wrenching and original Holocaust movie that looks at this horrific event through the innocent eyes of a child. Done with such subtlety and authenticity that it’s much more than just emotional manipulation
British
The Damned United
Would have been one of the better football dramas (facing stiff competition from practically none) had it not been based on a vastly superior book. This football love-in really needs a darker edge to make it more The Wrestler than Escape to Victory.
Zulu
An old school war epic that will be sure to entertain and have you rooting for the surrounded British troops as long as you ignore the total glorification of the Empire (the British one, not the one that struck back).
The Iron Lady
Oddly this is simultaneously a brave movie and a toothless biopic. It’s certainly lifted by a stellar performance from Meryl Streep that goes beyond mere impersonation.
Goldeneye
Undoubtedly ridiculous but hugely entertaining with cool characters, a likeable new 007 and awesome stunts. Just the shot in the arm the Bond series needed.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer
Don’t be put off by the synopsis. A film about perfume and sniffing really can be a dark, intriguing thriller.
