From the start of this film, with voice over from Tris (Shailene Woodley) setting out the scene as we pan over a broken and largely abandoned cityscape (Chicago, 100 years after the war) the visuals are stunning and an integral part of the story. I’m not usually a fan of narration, but it works here […]
Science Fiction
Monsters
Gareth Edwards has created an understated and enjoyable sci-fi movie that doesn’t feel the need to pander to the staples of the aliens-on-earth-genre. Strangely, a film that’s more about people than monsters. Deep, man, deep.
The Day the Earth Stood Still
A pointless remake that’s ruined by trying to bring it up to date. At least Keanu Reeves found his perfect role as a man with no personality.
Looper
Intelligent, well-acted and just complex enough, Looper is the best time-travel movie since Back to the Future.
Iron Sky
Timo Vuorensola should be shot for wasting the amazing premise of Nazis on the Moon. Too much cheesy humour ruins a film that should have been played a lot straighter.
Prometheus
Ridley Scott sets up Prometheus perfectly, only to vomit up a very unsatisfactory conclusion. A missed opportunity.
