A Separation

The best (only) Iranian film I have ever seen is a well-crafted and intelligent family/courtroom drama with a shoe in for the Best Foreign Language Oscar.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

More of the same from Robert Downey Jr. and company as Ritchie takes the spirit of Sherlock Holmes and gives it a modern twist. A fun watch but sometimes the special effects need to be toned down a little.

The Iron Lady

Oddly this is simultaneously a brave movie and a toothless biopic. It’s certainly lifted by a stellar performance from Meryl Streep that goes beyond mere impersonation.

Goldeneye

Undoubtedly ridiculous but hugely entertaining with cool characters, a likeable new 007 and awesome stunts. Just the shot in the arm the Bond series needed.

Leningrad Cowboys Go America

One of the best spoof musicals ever and it comes from Finland. Leningrad Cowboys Go America is a great take on the American Dream with plenty of amusing moments and a wonderful style.

13 Assassins

A visual and action packed triumph that will delight those who get aroused by swords and Samurais. It’s well paced and entertaining however some people (me) may just find the epic final battle scene a little repetitious and boring.

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

Don’t be put off by the synopsis. A film about perfume and sniffing really can be a dark, intriguing thriller.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

A likeable, old fashioned blockbuster that puts the Mission: Impossible franchise and Tom Cruise back on track. Not a classic but a fun watch nonetheless.

Lawrence of Arabia

David Lean’s based-on-a-true-story epic oozes star power and quality on a scale rarely seen before or since.

We Need to Talk About Kevin

A clever, touching and, at times, irreverently funny tale of a mother and a psychopathic son told with huge amounts of subtlety and depth.
