One of Hollywood’s great historical epic adventures floating in a sea of missed opportunities, Mann perfectly mixes action, romance and good characterisation. Also, only one of two films that have ever made me weepy. The other being Little Nicky – different reasons.
War
Starship Troopers
Paul Verhoeven is at his crazy best with this mixture of B-movie shoot-em-up and anti-Imperialist critique. It’s much deeper than it would seem at first glance but it’s also great fun.
300
Historically inaccurate and over the top it may be, but this lesson in how to use CGI properly is certainly a lot of fun. Unless, of course, you are the Dictator of Iran.
Centurion
A Roman adventure yarn that, despite some decent action and an interesting enough plot, annoys in a hundred different ways
Glory
This American Civil War epic has the feeling of a made-for-TV movie but is carried by a truly inspiring story and some excellent performances.
Green Zone
Greengrass and Damon deliver enough intrigue and full blooded action to satisfy fans of the Bourne series but they fail to create three-dimensional characters or add anything substantial to the genre.
