Kill Bill: Vol. 1

Quentin Tarantino is a genius, and this is his masterwork. Exuberant, inventive, kinetic, violent and fun, it grabs your attention right from the beginning and never lets go. Quite possibly the reason cinema was invented.

Batman Returns

The best ‘Batman’ film – entertaining and visually fantastic. You’ll never look at penguins in the same light again!

They

Despite being almost completely overlooked upon its original cinematic release, and resorting desperately to the 'Wes Craven presents' imprimatur to gain attention, 'They' is an atmospheric, carefully controlled piece of psychological horror about the impossibility of casting light upon the irrational. Its subtle use of shadow and gloom is best appreciated with the lights turned down, but do keep in mind that 'they come for you when it's dark'.

Swordfish

Decent thriller with some fabulous cinematography and lots of action.

Young Adam

A well-made and well-acted film with a distinct indie feel to it. Just a pity David Mackenzie couldn’t find a better tale to give his big screen adaptation treatment to.

Ransom

Great Friday night popcorn fodder – well worth a rent.

Enough

Don’t let the subject matter fool you – you won’t be able to take this movie remotely seriously. Jupiter. I ask you.

Once Upon A Time In Mexico

Gunfire and violence alone don’t equate to a good story – it’s not funny, it’s not clever, it’s not sexy, and it’s not remotely interesting. It is one thing though – complete rubbish.

Tears Of The Sun

A fairly well executed actioner with plenty for war flick fans to salivate over – but there’s gotta be a nicer way for Brucey to pay the bills until ‘Die Hard 4’?

Bad Boys 2

Big budget nonsense, which commits the fatally smug error of supposing that just about anything will acquire charm and wit merely through Will Smith's involvement. 'Bad Boys 2' is full of misfiring humour, inappropriately sadistic violence, and paddle-pool shallowness – just about its only virtue is that, though it seems to last a lifetime, it is thankfully soon forgotten.
