The Long Good Friday

Engrossing and influential, this laid the groundwork for every British gangster-flick that followed. Where would Guy Ritchie be without stuff like this?

Party Monster

A clever, funny tale of people at their most irresponsible and unhinged, which puts the 'high' back into high camp.

The Sixth Sense

Flawed in places, but essentially a fascinating film full of shocks, atmosphere, heavily-religious symbolism and one of the all-time classic twists.

Cypher

A spy thriller, an existential thriller and a brainteaser all at once, with great performances and hallucinatory visuals. Highly recommended.

Alien: Resurrection

Visually impressive, but too much of it is contrived and totally far-fetched – making it effectively the binary opposite of the original movie. Here is a prime example of a franchise that should have quit while it was ahead.

Alien: Legacy

A nicely-packaged collector’s item which anyone who’s a fan of the series will love. Anyone else would be better off just getting the first two – that way’s cheaper, and you really wouldn’t be missing out on much.

Confidence

A good con film, but unfortunately in a world full of great ones. Worth, however, seeing more than once, which cannot be said of a lot of other films.

Hollywood Homicide

Jaded LA homicided detective Joe Gavilan has seen it all before and is surprised by nothing – which is just how you will feel after viewing this tired old hokum.

Alien3

Marvellously directed and well-acted, but a dirty and wholly unrewarding experience, containing major plot-holes thanks to a complete disregard of what went on in the previous movie.

Freddy vs. Jason

With the exception of 'Jason X' and 'New Nightmare', this is probably the best sequel in either franchise. Very gory, very knowing, and very funny.
