Justin Molotnikov delivers an excellent film debut with a darkly comic thriller that presents well-paced storytelling, inventive flourishes and two quality leads.
Thriller
Amores Perros
This hard-hitting drama following intersecting lives on the mean streets of Mexico boasts quality storytelling, an interesting context and Gael García Bernal’s breakthrough role. Well-worth it as a foray into Latin American film-making. Not suitable for vegetarians.
Kick-Ass
A fresh and inventive superhero satire that provides spot on humour, involving characters and a rousing soundtrack to a world (okay, maybe just me) tiring of a saturated comic book genre.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Measured storytelling, comprehensive characterisation and a number of hard-to-spot plot twists, should make this perfectly crafted crime thriller Sweden’s best export since Ikea.
Green Zone
Greengrass and Damon deliver enough intrigue and full blooded action to satisfy fans of the Bourne series but they fail to create three-dimensional characters or add anything substantial to the genre.
Children of Men
With an involving story, realistic setting and well executed action scenes, Children of Men is one of the best Dystopian movies out there.
