Dreaming of Julia (2003)

Rating: 0/10

Running Time: 109 minutes

— P R E V I E W –Cuba, 1958 — the last year of the Batista regime. Fidel Castro's revolt has the tide going its way. This turmoil seems distant to the small town of Holguin, where the charismatic fixer Che (Harvey Keitel) looks after his family and friends, humoring Police Captain Rosado (Daniel Lugo) while helping the rebels. At the neighboring Frexes Theater, Che's grandson, the Boy (Andhy Mendez) and his beloved grandmother Beta (Diana Bracho) watch endless Hollywood movies every night, wrapped in their magic.

One night, right at the gripping climax of an air hostess called Julia (Doris Day) trying to land a plane full of passengers, the lights go out. The rebels have blown the town's power plant, and it will be a year before the lights come back. Life carries on pretty much the same, but for our young movie-hungry hero, the power failure is a disaster. He must learn what happens to Julia!

We meet the Boy's colorful relatives, friends and neighbors. He must cope with his dad (Gellerman Baralt)'s departure into exile, which devastates his mother (Cecilia Suarez). Movies are brought back to the town's parks and plazas by Uncle Armin (Gabino Diego), with his crazy invention of the Cinemovil, using a car's energy to run the projector.

Torn between family loyalty, the painful fires of his first love, and his friendship with Julia (Iben Hjejle), the mysterious American blonde who has become his mentor and muse, the Boy is forced into a harsh, new world of longing and the loss of innocence, betrayal, disillusion and redemption. A dangerous, marvelous world where broken dreams sometimes come true.
