I was pretty taken aback by how poor this monotonous thriller is. Best used as a way to scare your kids into not travelling and staying at home.

I’m afraid you probably won’t be afraid of Don’t be Afraid of the Dark, A very middle of the road horror film that’s not great but okay for a bit of mindless entertainment.

Ben Affleck’s latest image enhancing effort is like a superhero movie with a cop-killing bank robber as the guy to root for. Uneven characterisation and cringeworthy cliches let this otherwise fairly gripping heist thriller down.

Certainly engaging, intelligent and compelling at times but not quite good, consistent or believable enough for the wealth of praise heaped upon it.

Not to be confused with the fairly awful Nineties reimagining, The Day of the Jackal is a marvellously stylish and classy thriller from Frederick Forsythe, the master of suspense.

This prequel is much better than the awful title suggests as it exudes an enjoyably throwaway quality. A good way to spend the inevitably rainy summer days.
